Tambuwal Responds to EFCC N189bn Probe, Calls Allegations Political Witch-Hunt

Tambuwal Responds to EFCC N189bn Probe, Calls Allegations Political Witch-Hunt
  • PublishedAugust 15, 2025

Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has vowed not to be silenced by what he describes as intimidation and political blackmail. His remarks come shortly after being granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following an overnight detention over allegations of N189 billion fraud.

EFCC Investigation and Bail Conditions

According to EFCC officials, the investigation focuses on the alleged misappropriation of N189bn during Tambuwal’s tenure as governor of Sokoto State. The senator was reportedly detained after honouring an EFCC invitation on August 6, 2025.

Tambuwal recounted that, despite his high-profile public service record — including his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, two-term governor, and now serving senator — he was not released on personal recognition.

“They insisted I must provide two top civil servants as sureties. My request was turned down. Despite being accompanied by three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, I was remanded in Cell N23,” Tambuwal stated.

He was later granted administrative bail, which allowed him to return to Sokoto, where thousands of supporters welcomed him back in a massive show of solidarity.

Political Reactions and Alleged Witch-Hunt

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the EFCC probe as a political witch-hunt aimed at weakening opposition parties ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. The party insists that the timing of the investigation raises questions about its true intent.

Tambuwal also accused the Sokoto State Government of setting up what he called a “kangaroo investigative committee” against him. He emphasised that no competent court or authority had found him guilty of any wrongdoing.

Defiant Stand Amid Political Tension

Speaking to the cheering crowd at his residence in Sokoto, Tambuwal reaffirmed his commitment to fight for equitable and democratic governance in the state.

“I cannot be intimidated or blackmailed. I believe I shall be vindicated, and victory shall be ours,” he declared, drawing chants of solidarity from the crowd.

Political analysts note that Tambuwal’s resilience is likely to strengthen his influence within the opposition, especially as Sokoto politics gears up for what could be intense pre-2027 election battles.
